8 essential items to include on your gear checklist for new puppies

Are you thinking about welcoming a puppy into your home this spring? It’s such an exciting time and preparation with the right gear is important. The following go-to gear checklist gives 8 essentials that you absolutely should have to get life with your four-legged friend off on the right track:

  • Crate/dog bed – Your new puppy will need his own special place. Many pet parents find crate training works well for puppies and, with a big enough crate, can be used as the dog grows. A good-sized crate and/or a cosy dog bed are must-have essentials for any pup.
  • Leash, collar and harness – The options on the market for all three of these items are almost overwhelming. The important thing is to insure you purchase size-appropriate items. Collars and harnesses will need to be replaced as your puppy grows. Many people prefer to start out with a standard type of leash for training purposes rather than a retractable version.
  • Waste collection bags – These are essential items to take with you on your daily walks.  Many now come with convenient dispensers that you attach to the leash so you’ve always got them with you when you take the dog out.
  • Dog food – When there are so many options for dog food available it can be difficult, even with research, to find the best option for your dog. For the best advice on what is appropriate for your dog and your situation, talk to your veterinarian. She can advise you on the best nutritional support for your dog’s breed and age.
  • Grooming equipment – You’ll be glad of basic grooming supplies (brush, nail clippers, toothbrush) to keep your dog’s coat free from tangles and to keep his teeth free of decay. It’s always useful to have dog-friendly shampoo available too to clean up a muddy pup.
  • Equipment for your car – The way you transport your dog in your car needs serious consideration.  A Travall Guard keeps your dog securely positioned at the rear of the vehicle and its vehicle-specific fit ensures there are no annoying rattles and that it stays securely in position. Adding in a Travall Divider and TailGate gives an excellent option to deter an excitable dog from leaping from the trunk.
  • Toys – These may not seem like a necessity, but trust us, you’ll be glad of these.  Using items such as puzzle toys helps keep a dog’s mind busy and distract him from destructive behaviors.

With just these 8 items on the gear checklist, you’ll be on the right track in your new dog care role. Wishing you many adventures with the new canine addition to your family!
