With spring on its way many of us start to think about different outdoor activities that we could try. If you’re an animal lover, want to get a full body work out and love spending time outdoors, then horse riding may be the new sport for you. The benefits of horse riding are immense. From physical exercise, to core strength and stability, to improved mental health thanks to the release of serotonin (both the horse and the exercise contribute here) – it’s a fantastic all rounder. Unlike many outdoor activities, horse riding is accessible to all ages and physical abilities. Learning to ride a horse is easily accessible by signing up for lessons at your local riding school. They will select a suitable horse for you to start out on and provide instruction too. There will be some gear that you’ll need to have yourself ahead of time. We list the 6 kit essentials for horse riding for beginners.
Horse riding for beginners kit list
The Helmet
It’s worthwhile investing in a well-fitting hat with a 3-point chin strap. Don’t be tempted to get a helmet second hand. Simply dropping a helmet can compromise its protective features. Visit a tack shop that has a trained hat fitter to ensure you get the right product for you.
The Riding Boots
Long riding boots with a small heel give your feet and legs the best protection, although some people may find them too restricting. An alternative would be to go for short jodhpur boots worn with gators for leg protection. Footwear such as trainers or wellies are not appropriate for this type of activity.
The Jodhpurs
Jodhpurs are the best choice long term although thick leggings can be a great first option. Try to avoid jeans or other trousers, which can be restrictive due to the lack stretch. If you are able to purchase jodhpurs look for versions with added grip in the bottom and inner knee areas.
The Gloves
These give protection to hands that may not be used to holding reins for long periods of time. To avoid blisters and sore hands, choose a pair of gloves designed specifically for horse riding that have extra protection between the fingers where the reins sit.
The Body Protector
This is an excellent kit essential for horse riding for beginners to ensure body protection should you fall from the horse or get kicked by the horse during your session. It’s designed to be worn over your clothes. Ideally a body protector should be fitted by a trained retailer, so head to your local tack shop for this item.
The Rubber Mats
An essential for your car for the journey home, to protect the carpet in your vehicle’s footwells from any mud, manure or straw that may have stuck to your boots during your equestrian session. You may not initially have put Travall Mats Terrain Edition high on your must-have riding list, but when that smell of manure won’t leave your vehicle, you’ll definitely be wishing you had.
