{"id":475,"date":"2017-12-04T08:12:07","date_gmt":"2017-12-04T08:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/?p=475"},"modified":"2017-12-04T08:12:07","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T08:12:07","slug":"staying-safe-on-the-road-in-snowy-conditions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/staying-safe-on-the-road-in-snowy-conditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Staying safe on the road in snowy conditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">With the prospect of some harsh weather conditions at this time of year, what can be done to keep your loved ones safer in snow and ice?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Prepare your vehicle for winter<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Install snow tires on your vehicle, not all-season radials.\u00a0 Snow tires give extra traction in ice and snow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Make sure your spare tire is also a snow tire.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Ensure your tires are correctly inflated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Chains add another level of safety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Upgrade your coolant levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Use windshield cleaner rated for winter conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Check your battery and replace it if unreliable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Carry a bag of sand, both for weight and traction, and a snow shovel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It\u2019s not always easy to change your vehicle, but if you will be traveling in winter conditions as a matter of habit, choose a vehicle with front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or 4-wheel drive.\u00a0 Rear wheel drive vehicles are more difficult to handle in icy conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Install a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travall.com\/en-us\">Travall<\/a> vehicle-specific pet barrier<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Keep locks from freezing up by using WD-40<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-479\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_snow_chains_on_tires-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"755\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_snow_chains_on_tires-final.jpg 972w, https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_snow_chains_on_tires-final-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_snow_chains_on_tires-final-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Know the road conditions<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">First and foremost, if the conditions are not safe, do not go! If you absolutely must, then plan your route well in advance.\u00a0 Check road safety conditions before you leave and try to check conditions as the journey progresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Check the weather forecast before you leave<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Try to check out the weather forecast for your current location, your final destination and for points along the route.\u00a0 If you are aware of weather warnings, there will be fewer surprises on the way. Carry chains if snow is expected and if you\u2019ll be traveling in hills or mountains. Ensure that <strong>everyone<\/strong>\u00a0has the appropriate clothing for the anticipated weather conditions. Having coats, hats, gloves and sturdy boots in the car is essential if you will be traveling in snowy conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Fuel up<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Start off with a full tank of gas and where possible don&#8217;t allow your tank to drop below half way. You may have to stop off at the gas station more frequently, but you don\u2019t want to run out of gas in snowy conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Prepare for driving in wintry conditions<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Know how to drive in icy or snowy conditions. \u00a0Drive more slowly than usual and slower than the posted speed limits. \u00a0Accelerate gently to avoid wheel spins. Allow more distance between you and other vehicles. Pump brakes gently and use gears to slow down. If possible, practice driving skills by using an empty parking lot to practice steering into a skid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Carry an emergency survival kit\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">First aid kit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Flares<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Blankets<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Garbage sacks\u00a0that could double as a tarp or rain poncho<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">High energy food like granola bars or dried fruit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A portable stove<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Matches\u00a0or a lighter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Candles (use for light and to keep the vehicle warm)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Tin can\u00a0for melting snow for water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Coats, wool socks, gloves, scarves and other winter clothing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-482\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_emergency_kit-final.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_emergency_kit-final.jpg 1404w, https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_emergency_kit-final-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_emergency_kit-final-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.travall.com\/en-us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/rsz_emergency_kit-final-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Where possible use main roads<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This may not always be an option, but try to stick to major routes, which tend to be cleared more than smaller local roads. If you become stranded you can get help more easily on major arterial routes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Additional driving tips<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Drive according to the conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Reduce speed in poor visibility, where there is snow, or if ice may have formed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Stay in a higher gear\u00a0to help keep control of the vehicle and avoid harsh braking and acceleration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Maintain larger safer stopping distances, you may have to double or even triple your stopping distance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Use headlights in poor visibility and snow so others can see you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Use rear fog lights.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">If you get stranded stay with your vehicle<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">If you need to keep the engine running to keep warm, ensure that the exhaust is not clogged with snow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Try to keep mobile devices charged so you can call\u00a0for assistance if necessary<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wherever you are driving during the Holidays, we wish you a good and safe journey.
