It looks like Easter celebrations are going to be rather different from usual this year.  The COVID-19 pandemic, has meant that big family gatherings and neighborhood Easter egg hunts are now something to look forward to in future years. But despite the lockdowns there are still fun ways to celebrate Easter and to include every family member – the dog too!  Knowing which activities are dog friendly isn\u2019t always obvious so we thought we\u2019d give some tips to help include your dog in scaled-down Easter celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easter egg hunts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Can dogs eat chocolate? The easy answer to this is simply \u201cno\u201d!  Chocolate contains something called theobromine.  In dogs this causes vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst, irregular heartbeat and seizures.  In the worst cases it can result in death.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re planning to do a small Easter egg hunt in your own back yard for your immediate family, we\u2019d recommend using plastic eggs for the children\u2019s egg hunt. This way, you don\u2019t end up with undiscovered chocolates in the yard that a curious pup might discover at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could also do an Easter egg hunt at home just for the dog.  Use carob or a chocolate substitute that is specially formulated for dogs.  There are plenty of them on the market these days that don\u2019t contain theobromine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easter treats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chocolate isn\u2019t the only danger at Easter time.\u00a0 Anything with lots of sugar should be avoided – save the Peeps for the peeps.\u00a0 Try to avoid giving your dog trimmings from your Easter lunch too. One of our recent blog posts given in this link<\/a> highlights 20 human foods that shouldn\u2019t be shared with your dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are there other Easter dangers for my dog?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re hopefully through the harshest of the cold weather. Tulips, daffodils and other bulbs are starting to flower.  I love to see those splashes of color appearing in what has been a pretty bleak looking yard for most of the winter. However, I\u2019m also conscious that these bulbs are poisonous for dogs and try to position them in an area of the garden that my dog isn\u2019t easily able to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your dog does manage to eat Easter items that are potentially poisonous, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
