It is transmitted through tick bites and can be hard to detect, but will cause recurring health problems. Deer ticks are usually found in forests\nor grassy, wooded, marshy areas near rivers, lakes or oceans. It got its name\nfrom numerous cases in Lyme, Conn., in 1975, and has since been reported in\nhumans and animals across the United States and around the world. It appears\nprimarily in specific areas including the southern New England states; eastern\nMid-Atlantic states; the upper Midwest, and on the West Coast, particularly\nnorthern California. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anytime\nLyme disease is discovered in a lab or by a doctor, it is reported to the CDC.\nYou can find a map from the CDC detailing confirmed cases of Lyme disease\nthroughout the years right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lyme\/datasurveillance\/index.html?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Flyme%2Fstats%2Findex.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Preventing Lyme Disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking\npreventative measures to make sure your pets don\u2019t get Lyme disease is the best\nway to protect them. It is best practice to keep your dog up to date on all\ntheir vaccines and worm treatments year-round, and especially important in the\nwarmer months, even during the last weeks of summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Use\nreliable tick-preventive products. Speak with your veterinarian about what tick\npreventive product your pet should use.<\/li><li>Discuss\nwith your veterinarian to decide whether to vaccinate your dog against Lyme\ndisease. However, it is a good idea to ask and confirm with your vet. If you\ndecide your dog should be vaccinated against Lyme disease, you will typically\nneed an initial vaccine followed by a 2-4-week booster and annual boosters\nafter that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Lyme Disease in pets \u2013 symptoms and treatments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your pet\nmay be infected for 2-5 months before they show any of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Decreased\nactivity<\/li><li>Joint\nswelling<\/li><li>Lameness<\/li><li>Loss\nof appetite<\/li><li>Fever<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSymptomatically,\nLyme disease can be difficult to distinguish from anaplasmosis because the\nsigns of the diseases are very similar, and they occur in essentially the same\nareas of the country. Lyme disease is diagnosed through a blood test that shows\nwhether an animal has been exposed to the bacterium.\u201d &#8211; American Veterinary\nMedical Association<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\nsymptoms can come and go and range in severity. Joint swelling can range from\ndays to weeks and may move from different joints or affect all joints at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully\nantibiotics usually provide effective treatment for Lyme disease. However, if you have more than one pet and one is diagnosed\nwith Lyme disease, your veterinarian might recommend testing any other pets who\nmay have been exposed to ticks at the same time. It is also best practice to\nget the whole family (human and non-human) tested because people and their pets\noften can be found together outdoors as well as indoors.
