So how can we be sure that what we are giving our dogs is not doing more harm than good?\u00a0 This can be particularly difficult during Christmas when there are all sorts of food temptations on offer. In an attempt to make things a little clearer for dog owners, we&#8217;ve put together a guide showing the 20 worst foods for your dog to consume.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here&#8217;s what <strong>NOT\u00a0<\/strong>to feed your dog and the reasons why.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Avocado<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A superfood for humans, but not for our canine friends.\u00a0 Avocados contain a substance called persin, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not just restricted to drinks, this also includes food that contains alcohol.\u00a0 Never give alcohol to a dog as this can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma, and even death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hops<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is an ingredient used in beermaking and just like the alcohol itself, is toxic <\/span>for<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> dogs, causing panting, an increased heart rate, fever, seizures, and can result in death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2846 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/petbarrier.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/hops.jpg\" alt=\"Happy Farmer\" width=\"402\" height=\"268\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Onions and garlic<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not only do these vegetables cause gastrointestinal upset, they can also damage red blood cells in dogs. This can be fatal.\u00a0 It should be noted that garlic in very small doses could be OK for dogs, but larger quantities are dangerous. Because of this, it is recommended to steer clear of garlic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coffee, tea, caffeine, and chocolate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All of the above items contain methylxanthines, <\/span>specifically<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> caffeine in coffee and theobromine in chocolate.\u00a0 These cause vomiting, diarrhoea, panting, excessive thirst, arrhythmia, seizures, and can also result in death.\u00a0 Even though these products have different levels of methylxanthines, it is best to avoid any kind of chocolate and caffeine entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grapes and raisins<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Grapes and raisins cause kidney failure. \u00a0Experts do not entirely understand why this is the case, but it is simply advised that dogs do not consume these fruits because of that potential outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Milk and dairy products<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs do not produce large quantities of the lactase enzyme, so are unable to break down the lactose in dairy products.\u00a0 Although small amounts of dairy products can be tolerated, larger quantities are likely to result in gastrointestinal upset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nuts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Macadamia nuts are particularly problematic. Although excellent for humans, these nuts cause weakness, tremors, vomiting, and hyperthermia. Not all nuts are bad for dogs, but the <\/span>high fat<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> content can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs and can ultimately lead to pancreatitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2817 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/petbarrier.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/macademia-nuts.jpg\" alt=\"macademia-nuts\" width=\"490\" height=\"257\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bones<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although this may sound like a good idea, stick to raw bones. Never ever give chicken bones, as these are too fragile for your dog. Cooked bones can splinter and cause a\u00a0choking hazard <\/span>for<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fat trimmings<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Feeding your dog with these can result in pancreatitis in dogs, so should be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Liver<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Liver contains a lot of vitamin A, which although good for humans can adversely affect a dog\u2019s muscles and bones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Citrus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although it is ok to eat small amounts of the actual fruit, other parts are toxic to animals.\u00a0 Keep peel, leaves, and stems away from dogs as the oils can affect the central nervous system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2818 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/petbarrier.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/orange-peel.jpg\" alt=\"orange-peel\" width=\"273\" height=\"185\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Corn on the cob<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although dogs can tolerate some vegetables, corn on the cob is not well digested in a dog\u2019s stomach. If your dog eats a large amount of the cob itself, look for signs of gastrointestinal upset or constipation as there may be an intestinal blockage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Persimmons, peaches, and plums<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The seeds of all these fruits can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction. The stone of a peach is particularly dangerous to a dog\u2019s health as it degrades to hydrogen cyanide when metabolised.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coconut and coconut oil<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Small amounts of the flesh may be eaten, but this can sometimes result in vomiting and diarrhoea.\u00a0Never give your dog coconut with the shell still on, as this can result in choking or even abdominal obstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Raw meat and fish<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Consuming raw fish on a regular basis can actually lead to a vitamin B deficiency in dogs. This may shows <\/span>as<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> a loss of appetite initially, followed by seizures, and possibly death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Salt<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just as with humans, consuming large amounts of salt leads to excessive thirst in dogs.\u00a0 It can also result in sodium ion poisoning, so salty snacks should be avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yeast dough<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Raw dough can continue to rise inside the dog, causing bloating and intestinal discomfort.\u00a0 It can sometimes result in a twisted stomach, which is a life-threatening condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2840 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/petbarrier.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/dog-looking-at-raw-dough.jpg\" alt=\"dog-looking-at-raw-dough\" width=\"333\" height=\"226\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mushrooms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If they are store bought mushrooms, chances are that your dog will not have an allergic reaction. \u00a0Do not attempt to give your dog wild mushrooms as there is a higher potential that these may be toxic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Xylitol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Used as a sweetener in many different applications including chewing gum and sweets, xylitol can cause insulin release, which leads to liver failure. The increase in insulin leads to hypoglycemia. Initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination. These symptoms can progress to seizures. Elevated liver enzymes and liver failure can be seen within a few days. Avoid this product entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What to do if your dog consumes these items<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If your dog consumes any of the above foods but has no symptoms, monitor your pet.
