Preparing your vehicle for post-lockdown adventures

During this lockdown period many of us have been driving our cars very infrequently or not at all. This may have had big savings in terms of outlay for fuel bills. However, you may find that certain parts of your car have not thrived or have even deteriorated during this period of limited activity, which could prove expensive to fix.  We show you what to check on when preparing your vehicle for post-lockdown adventures so you’ll be ready when restrictions are lifted.

Battery

You may already know what it is like when you return from a long holiday to find that you can’t start your car.  Your battery will have been discharging during that time of lack of use.  The same type of thing will have been happening due to lack of use during the lockdown period. Using your car when you go to do the weekly supermarket shop will help keep the battery charged especially if you can drive your vehicle  for about 15 minutes.

Tyres

It doesn’t take long for tyres to develop flat spots when they aren’t being used.  Check your tyre pressures regularly to make sure they are at the right level.  Also make sure the condition of your tyres is good

Brakes

Unused brake discs start to corrode very quickly.  Make sure that your brakes are in full working order before venturing out on the road again and apply the brakes gently and often to start.

Fluids

Top up oil as needed as well as other fluids such as water and antifreeze. Driving to do your weekly shop will help the oil to circulate in the engine. Don’t forget to fill up with fuel if it’s been a while since you last went to the filling station.

Preparing your vehicle for post-lockdown adventures

After the lockdown restrictions are lifted, but prior to embarking on a particularly long journey, try to drive your car for 20 to 30 minutes on a dual carriageway or motorway.  This will help to fully charge the battery and to get the gears and engine back to their normal functioning ability.
