Are you desperate to include your dog in the Halloween fun? As with other big events, Halloween can be a stressful time for pets as not all enjoy being dressed in costumes, not all like having lots of trick-or-treaters coming to the door, and many of the treats of the season are downright bad for dogs. Here are some suggestions to make Halloween with your dog a good experience for her and for the rest of the family too.
Treat your dog
Bake some dog friendly treats. Many of the treats that humans consume at Halloween just aren’t suitable for dogs. So an easy way to avoid xylitol, chocolate and other ingredients that are toxic for dogs is to bake your own treats. Why not try using our favourite dog treat recipe? They look great in pumpkin and ghost shapes too!
Fancy dress
There are plenty of costumes available on the market for dogs, or if you are creative you could make your own. Some dogs are completely fine with being dressed up, but be mindful that some dogs hate the restricted or hot feeling. If that is the case, a Halloween themed collar or bandana could be a good option.
Take part in a Halloween event
There are various events around the country that allow you and your pooch to get into the spirit of Halloween. Some of these involve costume parades and competitions and many are in aid of a good cause. Why not see what’s available in your area?
Allow him to opt out
If Halloween is just a bit too much for your dog with the constant doorbell ringing of trick or treaters or the scary costumes that family members might be wearing, don’t push it. Allow your dog to have quiet time away from the ghoulishness. Check on him frequently and give treats and plenty of fuss.
Wishing you all a Yappy Halloween!
