Today is National Biscuit Day.  You probably know many people who love biscuits and dogs are no exception. There are few things that get a dog’s tail wagging as fast as the opportunity to have a tasty treat. Doesn’t every good dog deserve one? Dog biscuits are big business in this country with a wide range of options available for your dog’s delight. If you like to bake and fancy having a go at making some tasty treats for your pup, we’ve got a simple dog biscuit recipe that‘ll be gentle on your pooch’s tummy too.

Chicken and rice dog biscuit recipe

  • 50 g (1/3 cup) cooked white rice
  • 50g (1/3 cup) cooked chicken
  • 250g (1 cup) buckwheat flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 150ml (2/3 cup) chicken stock

Preheat oven to 180oC fan (350oF) (190oC (370oF) for a conventional oven) or gas mark 4.

Blend cooked chicken, cooked rice, flour and salt in a food processor until mixture is smooth.  Gradually add the egg and chicken stock and blend until it forms a smooth ball.

Place dough on a well-floured surface and knead until you have a drier dough.  Roll out dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of about 1.5cm. Using a dog-inspired biscuit cutter (or cutters that spell out your favourite make of dog guard), cut out biscuits until all the dough has been used.

Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven for approximately 17 minutes.  Leave to cool and harden.

Treat your dog and watch that tail wag.
