For many people, the enjoyment of a trip begins a long time before the actual holiday itself. Planning when and where you want to go and what to pack are for many people part and parcel of the pleasure of the adventure. You may give serious thought to your own holiday wardrobe and the various pieces of outdoor gear that you are going to take, but do you give enough thought to dog travel and what to pack for your dog? We’ve got suggestions for some dog travel essentials, so that he feels just as much at home when he’s away.
What to pack for travelling with your dog:
A familiar blanket/bedding and favourite toy
Your dog will feel more comfortable on a trip if there are some familiar smells and items around him. Taking some bedding and a toy can help reduce dog travel anxiety that comes from sleeping and spending time in unfamiliar areas.
Collar, leads and harness
Your dog will want to be able to enjoy walks while on holiday, just as he does while at home.
Dog coat/sweater depending on season
This will depend on where you are travelling and what time of year you are going there. If the weather is likely to be cold or inclement a coat for your dog will not only keep him cosy, but can also help reduce the need for a vacation time bath.
Usual dog food and treats plus some bottled water for the journey
Nobody likes to get ill on holiday and you don’t want your dog to either if at all possible. Dogs can easily get upset stomachs when they switch to a different diet. It’s best to be consistent and feed your dog the same dog food on your holiday as you’d feed him at home.
Bowls for food and water
Ensure your dog has a way of eating and drinking. Some manufacturers offer collapsible bowls, which can be helpful if you are short on space in the boot.
Vehicle-specific car accessories
Having a Travall Guard and Divider keeps your dog in a secure comfortable position on the journey. Adding in a Travall Liner helps prevent him slipping around on the bends and helps keep your car clean and fresh too. These items are essential if you have a dog who is anxious when travelling. We’ve got further tips on how to cope with anxiety in your dog, which could make the journey that bit more enjoyable.
Pet passport if going overseas
This is essential if you intend taking your dog over to the continent. Why not read out blog post to find out how to get a pet passport for your dog?
First aid kit for dogs and any required medications
For those little injuries or problems that crop up when you least expect. Take a look at our blog post on what to include in your dog’s first aid kit.
Photocopy of vaccination card
Should your dog fall ill while you are away and you need to see a vet urgently, it will be very helpful for the attending vet to see what vaccinations your dog has already had.
Waste collection bags
No matter where you are travelling, the basic bodily functions will still need to be addressed. Make sure you have plenty of these with you as you may find your dog goes more frequently than he does at home.
A towel and basic grooming supplies
Whether home or away you still want your dog to feel comfortable and look well presented. A towel is always useful especially if the weather is wet and having grooming supplies allows you to take care of knotted fur and mats before they become uncomfortable for your dog.
Wherever you travel with your dog this summer, we hope you enjoy the journey!
